Alexander Pushkin
Alexander Pushkin's hometown was Moscow, the capital of the Russian Empire at that time. The city had also been called "New Rome." It is a magnificent city with many important palaces and grand buildings and theaters. It lies on two rivers.
Characteristics: Because Russians at this time lived in a tyrannical state, Pushkin used his writing as a way of expressing the agony and suppression of the Russian people. He often got in trouble for his outspoken political views.
Famous Works: Eugene Onegin, The Captain's Daughter, Boris Gudunov, Rusian and Ludmila Influences: Because of his low paying government job, and his lack of freedoms, Pushkin used this as a big center line for many of his poems. Guy de Maupassant Guy was born in the very small humble farming town of Tourville-sur-Arques, that is home to about 1200 people. Characteristics: He was a master of the short story,and his stories were usually built around simple episodes of everyday life, which revealed hidden sides of people.

Leo Toltsoy was born in Yasnaya Polyana, an estate in the Tula Region of Russia about 120 miles from Moscow. It is now a popular state run museum.

After living a life of failed schooling and debauchery, he began to write about his experiences in the military, and also had a religious conversion and awakening in his later life. His ideas of nonviolent resistance inspired leaders such as Ghandi, MLK, and and James Bevel.

Anton Chekov Chekov was born in an industiral port city of Russia called Taganrog, on the banks of the Black Sea.
Characteristics: Chekov wrote many short stories, and is considered by many writers to be prolific in them. He first wrote them as a way of picking up extra money to support his family. He mostly wrote short, humorous sketches about modern Russian life. After Chekov had gathered more money and began working for a newspaper, he began to write more serious longer novellas and short stories.
